The CO2 or greenhouse gas emissions associated with the product service system have been calculated by a credible certification body, typically a third party entity. The certification should appear on the product or its packaging. The greenhouse gas emissions may be given in CO2 equivalents.

A ‘third party’ refers to an entity that is independent of the company or entity requesting certification. This is usually a consultant engaged to conduct the certification study, who is not an employee of the company. The purpose of third party certification is to provide a fair and accurate assessment, leading to potential certification, that is not influenced or coerced by the company requesting the certification.

Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), nitrous oxide (N2O), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur dioxide (SF6) are the six recognized anthropogenic greenhouse gases*. The six molecules vary in their ‘strength’ or ability to act as a greenhouse gas. Therefore, to simplify reporting and communication, emissions of C42, HFCs, NOx, PFCs, and SF6 are each calculated in ‘CO2 equivalents.’

*Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) has been recently recognized as a greenhouse gas.
